The New West Partnership Trade Agreement (NWPTA) builds on the Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA) between British Columbia and Alberta, and includes extending the same seamless corporate registration processes to Saskatchewan.
The agreement benefits businesses by eliminating the multiple registrations and reporting requirements across the three provinces and streamlines the regulatory requirements to start and operate a business, making it easier to do business in the West. This far-reaching economic partnership is designed to foster prosperity through meaningful interprovincial collaboration and will create jobs by making the markets attractive to investors.
NWPTA will be phased in over the next year. The initial service is available to corporations doing business in Saskatchewan, and vice versa. This includes the same processes currently in place with Alberta, with some enhancements.
In July 2013, this same service will be available to businesses registering as limited partnerships or limited liability partnerships in British Columbia, and cooperative associations incorporating in British Columbia, that wish to extraprovincially register in Saskatchewan, and vice versa. This service will continue to be available now to Alberta limited partnerships, limited liability partnerships and cooperative associations as offered under the former TILMA Agreement.
Most registrations and other filing updates for a British Columbia company about to register, or already registered in Alberta or Saskatchewa as an extraprovincial company, can be submitted electronically through the BC Registry Services self-serve filing application, Corporate Online. On the Corporate Online menu NWPTA transactions are found under the NWPTA Submissions menu. Here you can:
- register an existing British Columbia company in a NWPTA jurisdiction;
- file updates to the Alberta and/or Saskatchewan attorney for service information; and
- update the company's head office information.
If you haven’t incorporated yet, you will need to use the Name Requests Online reservation application first to reserve the company name in British Columbia. Name Requests Online also allows you to request a NUANS search for Alberta and/or a name search for Saskatchewan. Once your name reservations are approved you can use Corporate Online to file an Incorporation Application and submit information to register the company in Alberta and/or Saskatchewan as an extraprovincial corporation.
